At Liverpool Street station, the concourse is weekend-quiet, airy light, with last-minute gift shops doing slow business, the Sweet Chariot sweets stand closed. Freya can’t remember the journey here, has been on autopilot since she walked out of her mum’s door. Thank you, she tells the little part of her brain that made it back to London.

A few years ago, when the ticket hall was being refurbished, a plague pit was uncovered right here. Hundreds of skeletons were excavated slap bang in the middle of London’s financial district. It felt like the beginning of a horror movie, and sometimes, Freya would imagine bankers turning into zombies and climbing the mirror-like fronts of office buildings, entrails swinging. For a while, whenever she had come to London, she would walk past the site wondering about the lives of all the people who ended up buried in a pit and think how, one day, these buildings will also be dust. Feeling this nihilistic always makes her hungry, but today there’s nowhere open with vegan food.

She sits on a bench and watches people walking past. They’re oblivious to the strangeness beneath their feet. You broke a family, she thinks. You polluted love. She gets up and starts walking. From somewhere, Lori’s face takes shape in her mind and tangles itself with the messy energy of the day. Lori needs my help. There’s something she needs to do.
